What is an Oxygen Concentrator?
It is an electronic device that gives oxygen to the patients by condensing ambient air into pure oxygen.
The air we breathe is 78% Nitrogen and 21% Oxygen. The oxygen concentrator takes the room air, removes nitrogen from it and then supplies 95% oxygen to the patient.
As per the principle of Pressure Swing Adsorption technology, these concentrators are used at homes for therapy where pressurized or liquid oxygen is inconvenient and dangerous.
It can recreate the functions of the oxygen cylinder. This concentrator uses electricity to function and the power consumption is minimal.
How to Use an Oxygen Concentrator : Here's Everything You Need To Know Before Buying It
Who can use
Only mild to moderately ill patients, who have an oxygen saturation level between 90-94, should depend on an oxygen concentrator and can use it at home. Because there is scarcity of oxygen, even those with oxygen level as low as 85 can opt for one. Anyone with oxygen saturation depleting below 80-85 may need higher flow of oxygen and will have to switch to a cylinder or liquid medical oxygen supply.
What's the use
An inflamed lung infected by Covid-19 is unable to use atmospheric air (that has 21 per cent oxygen) to draw enough oxygen. External oxygen support makes the job easier for lungs. Also, steady electricity supply is a must. If you live in a place with frequent power cuts, you may want to look for an oxygen cylinder.
How is it used
- Switch ‘ON’ main power source where the power cord of the Oxygen Concentrator is connected
- Place the machine in a well ventilated location preferably 1-2 ft. away from the wall so that the intake and exhaust have clear access
- Connect the humidifier (Usually required for Continuous Oxygen flow more than 2-3 LPM)
- Ensure that the particle filter is in place
- Connect the Nasal Cannula/Mask and ensure that the tubing is not kinked
- Turn-on the machine by pressing the ‘Power’ button/switch on the machine
- Set the Oxygen flow as prescribed by the physician on the flow-meter
- Bubble out Oxygen by putting the outlet of Nasal Cannula into a glass of water, this would ensure the flow of Oxygen
- Breathe through Nasal Cannula/Mask
